Answers

Q1 Where to Place the Navigator 7000 Adventurer in your vehicle
To ensure that the satellite signal can be received, you should position the Navigator 7000 on the dashboard below the windscreen mirror. With heat-reflective windscreens, the Navigator 7000 may require an external antennae. Please make sure that you don't install the Navigator 7000 within the areas of the passenger cabin that are subject to impact in a crash, or in the area into which the airbag would expand. In addition, you should be sure that when installed the Navigator 7000 does not block the driver's line of vision

Q7

How To Change The Road Angel Time to British Summer Time
The clock setting is taking from the GPS satellite signal. As this is a global system it does not automatically adjust between GMT and BST.
If the clock is wrong you will need to adjust it manually.

Please see the following links for further instructions:

Q8

70% No response From Server error
We've become aware that a percentage of users are experiencing the follow error whilst download camera updates 70% .. No response from server A potential cause maybe one of the following:

  1. Your PC maybe infected by Spyware (a common example is a Spyware called Fun Web Products
  2. Unit not plugged into PC USB (ie not using a USB Hub)
  3. Firewall blocking download (Norton's or Windows Firewall)

Solution 1.
You will need to download an appropriate spyware removal package. Although we can't recommend specific products - suggest you try using Webroot Spysweeper http://www.webroot.com . PLEASE NOTE: We cannot support any anti spyware products nor support this process.

Solution 2.
Make sure you have plugged the USB cable directly into the back on your PC and try another update.

Solution 3.

Q9 What is GPS?
Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwide radio navigation system that uses 24 satellites that orbit the earth. GPS receivers, like Road Angel, use these satellite signals to calculate it's position to a couple of metres .

Q10 Updating Road Angel via a proxy server
It is possible to update a Road Angel unit using a Proxy Server, however we don't recommend this method

The basis of how a proxy (caching) server works is that, the proxy server stores frequently viewed pages or sources and then instead of you connecting directly to our Road Angel servers, you connect to the proxy. So it's possible that you may not get the latest Road Angel update.

Q11

The speed display on my Road Angel differs slightly to the speedometer in my car
At a constant speed the Road Angel has a more accurate speedometer reading than that of the car. This is because the speedometer readout is governed by the rolling circumference of the tyre in contact with the road surface. Different tyre pressures, sizes and tread ware can all make a difference to the speedometer reading. For this reason every manufacturer has to calibrate the speedometer to ensure that at no point can the vehicle be traveling faster than is indicated.

The Road Angel speed lags because it checks it's position once a second, there will always be a delay under acceleration and deceleration.

Q12 Mac Software
Software for the Mac Platform for Road Angel Compact, Navigator and Plus  is currently being developed for launch in late 2006 (we do not have a release date as of yet) For Classic Road Angel & New Road Angel (2) an optional external modem is available that will allow you to update your Road Angel unit. Please contact sales@blackspot.com

Q13

Is Road Angel a detector?
Road Angels* use GPS to check it's location against an onboard database of accident blackspots, Primary Schools, congestion charging zones and fixed camera locations. When you are approaching any of these, Road Angel provides a warning.

* New Road Angel & Road Angel Plus feature an integrated front and rear laser detector.

For more information on laser detection click here .

Q14 How often should I update my Road Angel ?
As a guide we recommend updating your Road Angel Plus approximately every two weeks. However, you can update as frequently as you feel necessary

Q16

There was no update software CD in my box
Due to software revisions we have only recently provided a CD in the box. If there was no CD provided with your Road Angel don't worry, you are prompted to download the software via the internet when you register your Road Angel. Click here to register.

If you have already registered with us you can download the software by clicking here

Q17

Road Angel does not display my speed
Road Angel Plus has an internal GPS receiver that needs to have a view of the sky in order to obtain the satellite signals required to calculate it's position. Road Angel Plus needs to be positioned on the dashboard of the vehicle or by using the windscreen bracket in order to do this. For discreet mounting, an antenna can be used. Click here for more information. http://www.blackspot.com/downloads/docs/MCXantenna.pdf

Some vehicles, for example Renault, Citroen, Peugeot some BMWs and Mercedes have what is known as an Athermic, comfort or UV windscreen. This interferes with the satellite signal being received by Road Angel Plus which results in either no speed being displayed, intermittent or erratic speeds. An antenna will be required, click here for more information. http://www.blackspot.com/downloads/docs/MCXantenna.pdf

Q18

Road Angel takes a long time to display my speed, is intermittent or displays erratic speeds.
Road Angel has an internal GPS receiver that needs to have a view of the sky in order to obtain the satellite signals required to calculate it's position. Road Angel needs to be positioned on the dashboard of the vehicle in order to do this. For discreet mounting, a re-radiating antenna can be used. Click here for more information. http://www.blackspot.com/downloads/docs/MCXantenna.pdf

The Road Angel has an internal battery that holds the Road Angel almanac data. The almanac data tells the GPS receiver where each GPS satellite should be at any time throughout the day. Each satellite transmits almanac data showing the orbital information for that satellite and for every other satellite in the system. Basically the Road Angel 'learns' where the satellites should be and this helps the speed of the acquisition. If the battery runs down it will lose the almanac data and the acquisition time will be increased.

Q19

I have driven past a fixed safety camera and did not receive a warning.
There are a number of reasons why this can occur.

The camera has been logged and added to the central database since you last update was completed .
For assistance updating Road Angel click here
http://www.blackspot.com/support/index.html

The camera was on the opposite side of the road.
Some Safety Camera Partnerships and Councils paint white lines on the opposite side of the road to the camera to give an impression that it can enforce in either direction, when in fact this is not the case.

It was not a speed camera.
There are lots of street furniture that can be mistaken for a speed camera. For example; Red Light enforcement cameras, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems and traffic flow measurement systems. For more information on the types of safety cameras click here.
http://www.blackspot.com/support/camera_info.htm

Q20 I was flashed by a GATSO camera that was on the opposite side of the road.
A GATSO camera can only enforce the speed of vehicles traveling away from it. When there is no film in a GATSO, the trigger threshold for a flash is often lowered, and the camera may be set to also flash approaching vehicles. The photograph cannot be used to enforcement or prosecution.

Q21 I've bought a second hand unit and I can't download updates
If you have bought or been given a previously registered Road Angel unit, you will have to have the unit transferred to your name. Please email newowner@blackspot.com with the previous owner details (if known), the serial number, your name, address, email & daytime contact number. We must have these details before we can transfer the unit to your name. Please allow 5 - 7 days for change of ownerships.

Q22

Can I use my Road Angel on mainland Europe?
Road Angel Navigator:
Is fully legal to use in Europe.

Classic Road Angel, New Road Angel, Road Angel Compact Plus, Road Angel Plus:
The legality of GPS and detector systems varies from Country to Country. We do not recommend taking these Road Angel units onto mainland Europe as this can result in a fine and/or confiscation of the device.

All laser detection devices are generally illegal to use/and to have in one's possession in Europe.

Road Angels sold in mainland Europe is modified to meet the legal requirements and has specific approval to allow it's use.

Q23 Traffic Red Light Cameras
The Road Angel database does not contain Traffic Red Light Cameras as these are not Safety Cameras nor are they related to speeding offences.

You can, of course, store these locations manually into your Road Angel as any of the alert type categories you wish.

Q24

Is Road Angel legal?
Click here for the latest information.

Usage of Road Angel outside of the UK: Units with laser capabilities may be illegal in certain countries. Our general advice is not to take your Road Angel unit abroad.
(Road Angel units in Australia and Continental Europe are sold without laser detection capabilities.)

Q25

How do I update Road Angel ?
You update Road Angel  via the internet using software that you will be prompted to download when you register your Road Angel.

For more assistance updating Road Angel, please refer to the specific Road Angel Support Page

Q26

I drove past a Speed Detection van but my unit did not activate.
A lot of people believe that the police are checking every vehicle as they go by, this is not the case. Guidelines state that an officer can only measure the speed of a vehicle that they believe to be exceeding the posted limit. This is often why a driver with a Laser detector fitted may see a gun or van nearby, but will not get a warning alarm as they drive by.
